(It) is an important and fundamental element of the European Union and, in my view, it would be catastrophic were Britain to opt to leave the European Union,” Kenny said.

“I think if you were removed from outside that Single Market and have no influence on the conditions that apply there, I wouldn’t think that it would be in the interests of any particular country.”

When asked by euronews whether any country should be allowed to ‘cherry-pick’ parts of EU membership, Kenny said: “The same conditions apply for all members. And in theory, if you were to say ‘OK, you can revise membership for one country’ then you might have a lot of applicants as well (seeking the same treatment).”

The Irish Prime bloc’s treaties, which they argued there is little prospect of as the EU grapples with the eurozone debt crisis.

The British Prime Minister will address diplomats and officials in Amsterdam on Friday morning.

Britain became a member of the European Economic Community, the forerunner to the EU, in 1973 despite rigid opposition from Welcome to The Network. We will be connecting shortly with our guests to get to the bottom of today’s issue. But beware, our guests have 25 seconds maximum to answer. Let’s take a look at today’s topic.

The battle lines are drawn: the defenders of the traditional mother-father family against those defending single parent and same-sex families.

Faced with opposition against homosexual marriage in France, president Francois Hollande backtracked, leaving it up to town and city mayors to decide.

President Hollande’s initial move was aimed at making public policy evolve to adapt to demographic change, as has been the case in several European countries for years now.

But in some countries, like France and Spain, the controversy surrounding gay marriage is gaining momentum. Although it is difficult to find statistics on homosexual couples in Europe, more than one third of European children are born outside of marriage – a figure that has doubled in the past 20 years.

Is European legislation and public policy following changes in the way people live together and have children? And what impact will that have on the new generations?

Connected to this edition of The Network are:

- Sophie in’t Veld, at the European Parliament.
Vice-president of the parliamentary commission on civil liberties, justice and interior affairs, and member of the intra-group on the rights of homosexuals.

- Joining us from Paris: Frigide Barjot, actress, founder of the “L’Humanité durable” (“Sustainable Humanity” group and the “Manif pour tous” (“Demo for all”) organisation.

- and joining us from Liège: Salvatore D’Amore, clinical psychologist and European Research Doctor in Psychology.

"freeField1":null,"freeField2":
'progressivemedia','gs_society_lgbt','neg_pmi','shadow9hu7_pos_pmi','pos_equinor','pos_facebook','gs_politics','gs_politics_misc','gs_family','neg_facebook_2021','sm_politics','neg_saudiaramco','gs_family_children','castrol_negative_uk','neg_mobkoi_castrol','gs_health','gs_society_misc','gv_safe'
"tweet2NdId":0
"titleListing1":null,"titleListing2":null

Legal freedom to marry is far from globally guaranteed, including in Europe. France for instance, is years behind others in the debate. We’ll focus on that in a moment.

Men married at Amsterdam’s town hall on 1 April 2011, for instance, celebrated not only their own union but also ten years of gay marriage in the Netherlands. The mayor spoke up for fairness.

Eberhard van der Laan said: “Gay marriage symbolises equality regardless of someone’s sexual inclination. Until ten years ago there was a huge barrier. It wasn’t possible to marry if you were gay or lesbian. What gay marriage means I think those who are gay or lesbian know best.”

The Dutch parliament had thought about legalising gay marriage for five years. The country’s gays had been lobbying for it since the 1980s. Then after the Netherlands lowered the marriage barrier in 2001 other countries followed.

In 2003 it was Belgium. The next year Massachusetts led the way for eight states in the US. Canada and Spain took the step in 2005, South Africa in 2006. Norway and Sweden made it legal in 2009, then in 2010 Iceland, Portugal and Argentina did likewise, Mexico City following suit in 2011, then some parts of Brazil in 2012, and Denmark.

Lawmakers based their moves on a principle of non-discrimination. But they faced strong resistance, notably from the Catholic Church. In spite of its religious influence in Spain, however, 25,000 gay marriages have been celebrated there since 2005.

And church groups didn’t surrender, in 2008, for instance, organising a demonstration in Madrid with tens of thousands of people in protest over the law the Socialist government had brought in.

But not all churches stood in the way. The Lutherans of Sweden, officially separated from the state in 2000, went along with the law as of 2009, not hesitating to sanction gay marriage at the altar.

The nation’s foremost religious voice said they had got a head start with their homework.

Archbishop of Sweden Anders Wejryd said: “Because of some reasons, because we are in a Lutheran tradition and that this issue has been wrestled with for almost 50 years within the church. We were prepared and it was brought up early that way.”

Sweden was an exception, for even in other majority protestant countries marriage in church, under the law, is the reserve of one man and one woman.

Laurence Alexandrowicz of euronews has been talking to Irene Thery.

“Irene Thery. You are a sociologist, and as such the French government consulted with you to prepare a draft law on gay marriage. Like me you have read that 60% of French people are in favour of gay marriage. So why is the debate on the subject so passionate? Is France homophobic?”

Irène Théry, sociologist: “Honestly I don’t think that France is homophobic. The polls show us some very interesting elements that prove that. For example, rural communities have sometimes been more favourable to gay marriage than the major cities. And there’s really a generational difference in the debate. People who are under 50 are very positive to both marriage and adoption. Those who are over 50 are much less in favour. The other element that feeds the debate is the willingness of the Catholic Church to turn this into a controversial issue.”

euronews: “You’re a specialist in family legislation and you’ve surely noticed that those who are against gay marriage and especially adoption highlight the effect on the children. Were there any studies about the impact on children in countries that have already adopted the law, notably Holland.”

Irene Thery: “I don’t really know the Dutch legislation, but according to what I’ve read there were many studies about same-sex parenting that conclude that children raised by two men or two women are as balanced as children brought up in heterosexual marriages, they are like all the others.”

euronews: “You talked about the Catholic Church in France. Spain and Portugal are Catholic countries and the law about same sex marriage and adoption for gay couples has been on the statue books for years. Were there many reservations?”

Irene Thery: “In Spain at the beginning there was a lot of reluctance. It was the same attitude in the parishes – the Catholic Church, brought together in Madrid, according to the organisers, 1.5 million people who were against same-sex marriage. Seven years later Spain and Portugal would not raise the idea of going back, the political majority has changed in Spain, and yet no one wants to change the law.”

euronews: “In countries that have adopted gay marriage, has the perception of homosexuality changed and are there many marriages and adoptions?”

Irene Thery: “There are not a lot of weddings and not many adoptions and this somehow reassures everybody. They realise that the family landscape has not been upset. Why is that because homosexuals are in the minority, they represent about 6% of the population.

‘Not all in that number are together as couples, not all marry and therefore it is not a very large number of people. Yet I think the perception of homosexuality radically changes as people see same-sex marriages. What is changing?

‘People see same-sex couples accompanied by their parents, grandparents, not isolated couples as we imagine. So there are several generations surrounding these couples. They show their love and understanding of the commitment which the couples are taking, and that has a very strong effect on social integration.”

"freeField1":null,"freeField2":
'gs_society','pos_equinor','pos_facebook','pos_pmi','progressivemedia','gs_society_lgbt','gs_family','neg_saudiaramco','neg_facebook_2021','gs_family_marriage','castrol_negative_uk','neg_mobkoi_castrol','gs_society_religion','neg_facebook_q4','neg_nespresso','gs_event_easter','gs_law_misc','gs_law','gt_positive','gs_politics_misc','gv_safe'
"tweet2NdId":0
"titleListing1":null,"titleListing2":null

The apparent premeditation behind the killing of three Kurdish activists in Paris has caused many to ponder on the motives behind the murders.

One thing is certain the deaths and the manner of the killings, a single bullet to the head of two of the women, a third was hit in the chest and head suggests something more than a botched burglary.

Euronews journalist Andrea Simone explores the murders in more detail:

Andrea Simone euronews:
“Our correspondent in Paris, Giovanni Magi, is at the scene of the killings as security forces begin their complex and no doubt international investigation into the triple murder.
Gianni we saw a crowd of distraught Kurds protesting against the killings. And then the sun set, and all was well.

The Internet rumour that the Pic of Bugarach would produce flying saucers to save some lucky souls who had believed the rumour… well, some rumours come true. But no one needed saving.

The people living here have been mostly easy-going about it. They said they had had UFO- and extraterrestrial-seekers coming here for decades.

A patron at a bar confided: “Bugarach is going to be a great claim to fame for the region, because we’re hurting. There’s no use hiding it: that goes for business and companies in the whole region. So, I think this will be a breath of fresh air.”

At a café counter, we heard: “There have been some more customers coming in since this morning, locals and crazies. It’s a big hoax but it’s good for business.”

We interviewed a local mortician, who said: “Hey, if it makes people come here, why not? We’re up for it, aren’t gonna throw dirt at it. If it’s like Lourdes and Rome, fine.”

Bugarach normally has fewer than 200 people.

Extra security was laid on, and the mountain was ruled out of bounds, but no great tide of humanity showed up.

A bakery server told us: “Today, this morning, I sold more croissants and stuff really early. Well, it started really early, so I’m happy, ‘cause I made a bit more cash.”

We asked: “So would you like to arrange more apocalypses so you sell more?”

The baker: “No, I’d sooner get it over with; it’s getting a bit much.”

Now that the suspense of ‘you never know’ has dissipated, the media correspondents can go on to their next assignments. Ours too.

Ali Sheikholeslami said: “Mount Bugarach behind me is not yet upside down: I can’t see any aliens around me; so perhaps it is really the end of the ‘joke’; and, if you can still see me, perhaps see you tomorrow.”

"freeField1":null,"freeField2":
'gt_mixed','neg_facebook_2021','gs_food','pos_equinor','pos_facebook','pos_pmi','gs_science','gv_safe'
"tweet2NdId":0
"titleListing1":null,"titleListing2":null
If you fly any plane in the right way at the right speed, you can go weightless, at least for a few seconds. Compared to previous generations, young people today are more likely to be unemployed, stuck in short term jobs and earn less. The question is: are we heading towards a generation conflict?

Carina and Ernestine are in Paris to launch a film about families and generations.

For their movie, they collected hours and hours of archive material from various countries.

Do these family portraits of the past have resonance with today’s youth?

“I look at previous generations, like my parents’, and I think life was easier before,” says Carina Engenheiro from Portugal.

“I have a lot of questions: will I be able to have a family, raise children or buy a house?” she asks.

Ernestine Cissé from France agrees: “I think it is harder for the new generation. When we’re finished with our studies, it’s hard to find a job. Either we are too highly educated or not enough. Of course that has an impact on our lives and whether we can afford to be independent.”

French sociologist Denis Monneuse has been studying the relationship between generations for his new book “The young explained to the old”.

“I don’t think there is a generation conflict today because members of a same family often help each other out,” he says.

“When it comes to the work place, it’s not so much conflict as competition. Sometimes there is a sense of competition because young people who are looking for work are often highly educated and skilled, they often speak much better English or other foreign languages than the older generation, they are IT literate, so some older employees feel threatened by this young generation,” says Denis Monneuse.

To make their movie, our young film-makers relied on collaboration between generations. They worked together as part of a team of 30 people of different ages, backgrounds and origins.

Their project was backed by the European Commission’s Grundtvig programme, which focuses on adult education and “alternative” education courses across the EU.

“Red Happiness” is part of a work project called Back to the Roots/Back to Our Origins. It was premiered at the Family Film Festival in Saint-Ouen, near Paris.

The man behind the short movie is French director and film-making teacher Julien Lahmi. The idea of an inter-generational film project was his.

“If you ask young people to talk about their lives, that’s too harsh, it’s painful,” he says.

“But if you ask them to talk about their lives through other peoples’ lives, then there’s a real dialogue. And young people facing problems today have a lot to learn from past generations. I don’t think they view them with jealousy or envy, no, I don’t see any conflict there,” he concluded.

Social Residents of these areas say that urban renewal projects just cover things up, that improving the facade does not solve and problems.

In Clichy-sous-Bois, a Paris suburb where there were large riots seven years ago. The area continues to deteriorate. Over the last three decades there have been many reports on the area, and the people have become distrustful. The media, like the police, are not welcome there and many told the euronews team to leave and that no-one would talk to them.

But out of sight, Abdel did agree to talk. Abdel says the roots of the problems for his generation as well as the older generation can be found in the history of France:

“It’s as if France was my father and I was an illegitimate child that he refuses to recognise. Our parents paid their taxes like everyone else, and then were cast aside. They were needed to rebuild France after the second world war but now they’re no longer wanted, they’re saying ‘get out of here, we don’t need you any more.’”

He also says that despite growing up in Clichy, he does not feel French: “Honestly, not at all, I live in France, my culture is French, but when I have problems or when I see that I need help, they’re not there for me.”

It is clear that discomfort is more pronounced in populations from old colonies. A historical resentment that does not fade, fed by everyday racism and isolation. Young people in the suburbs are thought of as Arab or black, uneducated, disrespectful and ready to burn cars at the first opportunity.

French politician, Benoit Hamon, is trying to improve the reputation of these areas:

“Basically, people think suburban equals young, equals hoods, equals a mess. But one can wear a hood without going out to steal old ladies’ handbags. The suburbs are always portrayed with a big S as a place not to live, where people are unhappy, they have no job, where people quit school early, but that’s not the reality. That’s not to say there are no problems, but the suburbs are not only problems, and if we stop thinking of them like that, it’ll make everyone feel better.”

Michèle Picard, the Mayor of the Lyon suburb of Venissieux echoes these feelings:

“We’re always interested in the suburbs when it’s going badly. There’s not so much interest when things are better. When our crime figures are good it’s not reported. It shouldn’t be swept under the rug trafficking and so on, but at the same time our neighbourhoods should not be summarised as only that.”

Hapsatou Sy has faced has faced many obstacles in her life. The 24-year-old grew up in the suburbs with eight siblings. She opened her first beauty salon at aged 17. A very young entrepreneur, full of spirit, she rejects the idea that young people from the suburbs can’t succeed:

“I’m sick of these people being thought of as low lives, I think the day you stop saying, ‘Look it’s the entrepreneur who grew up in the suburbs,’ or ‘It’s the black businesswoman‘ it’ll be a big step.”

“I’d say someone who comes from a place which is extremely, poor and difficult is someone who’s been hurt by life and who may be aware of certain things that others who were born with a silver spoon are not aware of.

“I had this mindset because I saw my father leave the house at 6am every day to make minimum wage with incredible pride. He never moaned, I never heard him complain so when you’re handed life on a plate, well you do something with it.”

Hapsatou is undoubtedly a role model, even if she rejects this status. But how can young people be saved from a vicious cycle, where they fail at school and look for easy money in all kinds of trafficking and sometimes get involved in radical Islam which thrives on those who are excluded.

Mohammad Mechmache of the community pressure group AcLefeu is trying to buck the trend:

“There is not one priority greater than another, it is the set. Housing, employment, school this is the priority. You have to start with the basics, work with young people, help them best you can. To ensure when they finish national education they know and respect the rules. Because unfortunately at 11 years and 12 years old it’s the age where things can change. Where they start hanging out in the streets and start being involved in the underground economy.”

One thing is sure, in 30 years in France neither the right nor the left has put an end to suburban unrest or the disillusionment of young people who are born there.

"freeField1":null,"freeField2":
'neg_facebook_2021','castrol_negative_uk','neg_mobkoi_castrol','gt_mixed','neg_nespresso','gv_crime','neg_facebook_q4','neg_facebook_neg1','gs_society','neg_bucherer','gs_family','neg_facebook','gs_family_children','neg_pmi','shadow9hu7_pos_pmi','gs_society_misc','gs_business','gs_education_misc'
"tweet2NdId":0
">
